Getting Started with the qTest Platform

The qTest Platform Quick Start Guide provides users a quick and easy way to begin their testing project from start to finish.  Below are the products that make up the qTest Platform.

Invite qTest Users

Everyone who signs up for a free trial will be defaulted as the System Administrator.  This means that the System Admin will be able to invite up to four other users into the qTest trial site.

  • Navigate to Administration

  • Invite Users 

 

Create a New Project

qTest allows users to create additional projects within their trial instance.  Below are the steps to users started in a new project.

NOTE: To access your newly created projects from the Administration screen, look in the top left corner access the drop down.

  • Click Administration link under User Profile Tab

  • Select Projects tab and click + Add new project 
  • Assign users to project and click + Add button
    • NOTE: This will add users at the Project Admin User level.  To see assign users within the project to other user profiles, please see the second image below. 

  • Add users with alternative user profiles, Click Settings + User Management 

Establish a Test Plan 

The Test Plan module functions to set the scope of the project both in time frame and in requirements to be covered.

  • Navigate to Test Plan tab and click New Release icon
    • Designate Start and End Dates

  • Create Builds underneath your release
    • Designate a Build date

Baseline Requirements 

Requirements are created then associated to a Release/Sprint in the Test Plan and to test cases for traceability.

  • Create Requirements for New Release 

  • Add Requirements to Release scope and Build Scopes (in Test Plan Module)

Design a Test Case 

Users are able to create test cases within qTest or import them from an Excel template the.  Once a test case has been created, users can then copy them into new test cases. 

  • Create and Approve a new Test Case

Link Test Cases to Requirements 

This linkage can occur either in the Requirements or Test Design module.

Run an Execution 

Through qTest, users can run test executions as many times as they want across multiple test cycles and suites. 

  • Create a Test Cycle under Release/Sprint 
  • Create Test Suite and add test runs to suite 

  • Run Test Suite Through Quick Run

  • Run Test Suite Through qTest Pad 

Submit a Defect 

There are multiple ways for user to submit a defect in qTest.  Below are the most common.

  • Quick Run 

  • Run Results 

  • qTest Test Pad 

 

 

View Reports 

There are multiple ways to report on projects metrics within qTest.   

  • Data Query
    • Located in top left corner of the Requirements, Test Design, Test Execution and Defects modules

  • System Reports
    • Located in top left corner of the Requirements, Test Design, and Test Execution modules

  • Reports Module

 

Integration Set-Up (JIRA/Rally/VersionOne)

qTest allows you integrate with external systems at the Requirements and Defects level. qTest has its own internal Requirement and Defect modules if you chose not to integrate with an outside system. 

Below is our integration with JIRA Cloud (On-Demand).  For those using JIRA Server (Local) please see our integration guide. 

  • Select Integration Settings

  • Add Connection (Note: Must be JIRA Admin)

  • Configure Connection

  • Add Defect Integration 

  • Add Requirement Integration (Note: Must be JIRA Admin)
    • Add Requirement Type Same as Defect Integration above
    • Optional: Get data from a specific filter, otherwise all issues of that type from that JIRA project
    • Click Retrieve JIRA Data Button

Submit a Ticket

The quickest way for users to receive help would be to submit a ticket through their qTest domain.

  • Click the Help icon and chose to Submit Ticket or Suggest a New Feature
